THis time around we could not meet Hudabhai  of photo studio in Nageshwar. As advent cinemahall was nowhere to be found, we came across Kaushik the scooterman who took us from Iskcon gate to Balaji Bhawan on the night we reached Dwarka from Somnath. On the day we were supposed to leave for Ahmedabad we came across one resident Jawahar who wanted to know whether we had visited Bet Dwarka or not. Taking tea from Krishna Viyay tea centre we came across Bharat from Jamnagar whose sister resided in Dwarka. As for meals the day we left dwarka we took from Annapoorna Bhajanalaya  run by Prakashbhai.
Our best wishes to Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan for winning the elections and the first woman President of the country, Ms Tsai, is supposed to take office in May. Hope she succeeds in bringing a robust economy and good fortune to her country.

The day we were supposed to travel to Gujarat, the night preceding that was spent tossing about various things. Would we be able to get the requisite air connectivity to Ahmedabad to be followed by Rajkot ? Would the flights be in time to reach Rajkot if not early next morning at least by late in the night? How much hours would be spent at the Delhi airport and the same at the Ahmedabad airport? Would we be required to take early morning flight or settle for early afternoon departure? Tossing in the bed the entire night the sleep was hard to come by with various permutations and combinations coming to the fore. Rajkot would be somewhere between 1250 to 1300 kms from Delhi and on the spot ticket fare stood at over 19000 rs. This was in the second week of December.

It was on a Wednesday we took a taxi to the DElhi Airport confident enough the flights would be secured given the seats that would be easy to come by. Unbelievable were the fares and unbelievable were the cheers for the airline industry (almost full seats amounted to public cheering for them). The departure terminal looked to be deserted and the lounge from which the tickets are taken looked as gloomy as never seen before. For DElhi-Ahmedabad flight the fares for just one seat available was over rs 10,000 and for Delhi-Rajkot the fares stood at little over 19000 rs. THe taxi fare to the airport (south delhi) and back to shanti niketan (that too in south delhi; the entire distance a little over 16 kms) where we left the taxi to seek internet train tickets was around rs 510. Here the taxis in the national capital are fairly expensive with no move to introduce those in reasonable price tag.

As we took premium tatkal train tickets, the thoughts went on the shape of traffic the national capital was witnessing with households which could manage with one vehicle maturing enough to lay the siege with three to four vehicles. Here the need of the hour is to have registration of vehicles through draw of lots and ceiling being not more than 10,000 registration of vehicles in a year followed by making the odd-even policy stand tall at least four days in a week throughout the year. This has to be followed by a vigorous roadmap that lets the elevated road corridor come up near the borders so that those trucks, vehicles vying to move to another State, say Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, need not enter the capital city. SEcond the realisation among residents that they should take out vehicles on the city roads only and only when it is absolutely necessary. THird be it any ground breaking ceremony sons and daughters deem it fit to celebrate through purchase of vehicles and this habit has to be discouraged. Households having one vehicle should be debarred from owning second and if still they deem it fit to have second an annual cess should be levied.  A complete database of number of households and number of vehicles owned by them should be drawn up as that would give a fair idea of who all can participate in the draw of lots. Earlier in the two-storey house there used to be two families compliant enough to own one vehicle each. With developer flats coming in, eight flats replacing two to three-storey house there are no less than eight to ten vehicles that see light of the day.
Those who would tend to circumnavigate the law by registering vehicles in another state and plying in the national capital of delhi should be debarred in the first place. Holding jansabhas on whether odd-even framework can be applied in future is no idea, most would argue it has to be applied three to four days a week for the entire year with exemptions withdrawn in a phased manner.   More important is to hold jansabhas on how primary health centres in each area can be ramped up, how the city government hospitals have to have requisite medical staff on rolls along with necessary equipments.

That multiplying of vehicles has a lot to do with turn of events in different sectors including media. In the media sector there are different range of editors commanding different level of salaries. Senior editor, associate editor, assistant editor, senior associate editor, senior national editor, senior political editor and a lot of other editors. When a newspaper recruits them it offers them hefty salaries which has no justification. Newspapers are within their rights to offer them huge salaries as full page ads can recover the cost. What an absurd logic. If the media had begun the process of offering middle level salaries and sensitising them on the need to own less and less vehicles this trend would have percolated to other industries.Normally we come across tees panne ka akhbar, assi panne ka magazine aur pachas editor aur badhte hue full page ads (A thirty-page newspaper, an eighty page magazine, fifty editors and full display of full page ads). Not only this amounts to multiple vehicles floating on the roads there are multiple aspirations on float. This percolates to other sectors like real estate, steel, construction and consumer durable arena. ONly if newspapers could cut down on their costs and desist from displaying full page ads on cars, vehicles, real estate and bonanza sale there could be some normalcy to their proceedings.

One newspaper in the first week of January reported the air fares have nosedived following low crude prices with Delhi-Chennai sector commanding over rs 8000 on the spot fare. Is it low? One newspaper in its business pages prominently reported some three to four months ago that the average salary of workers in a public sector car manufacturing company on the outskirts of the national capital had gone up by at least rs 16,000 a month.When unemployment is such a big issue in the country with deteriorating law and order aligned to that, was there a need to highlight such story. Only when the number of vehicles are brought down on the city roads there would be lessening of crime. As the vehicles get stuck in traffic jams they tend to regret the road they took and the timing they chose. As a result when they reach their place some among them (some among them) take to drinking followed by merciless beating of family members and domestic assistant. This is followed by tongue-lashing followed by abuse. The next morning when they reach their place of work and some among them lash out (abuse included) at their juniors/comrades followed by fudging of accounts. This is what some of the vehicle occupants go through when stuck in traffic rigmarole. There is a heavy cost to be paid for being in a state of snail movement among vehicles of different price tags as evident by earlier observation.

One paper had a story on Subhas Chandra Bose done by Ashis Ray in the editorial page. The piece detailed the circumstances leading to Netaji's elevation as President of Indian National Congress and how he was dethroned, a democratically elected President being shown the door. ON socioeconomic issues he was on the same page with other Congress leaders yet he had to leave the country in 1941.  Here if the paper could reach an understanding with ousted workers by offering them 7L to 10L as compensation and workers also agreeing to the same. Some would find this observation to be offensive and no outsider should speak but there has to be a way out.
How much the Cong as a party  swayed from the time when Subhas Chandra Bose was its President to the time when the House does not function. Taking padyatras is ok but you should offer tangible solutions. As for leaders of different parties there should be a bar on the number of times they take to travel by air in a year and attending a plenary session here, inauguration there, it is all done on public money and party money. Oh ho a plenary session has to be attended in Vishakapatnam, a party meet has been organised in West Bengal. Oh ho a conference has been organised in Kutch. A plenary session is in Kerala. It is all done on public money and party money.

As for those spreading disturbances in our area we have been told they would move out soon. If you want to wipe out disturbances you should wipe it out from the base including from the areas from where we are threatened to speak out now and then. For how long we would be threatened with their abusive violent mindless  tactics.

IN places like Somnath, Dwarka, Nageshwar Okha and Bhavnagar multiple vehicles zeroing in on city/town roads were hard to be discovered. So there were hardly any case of road rage or one flouting traffic norms.
As we write about these smaller towns/cities with a beauty of their own some were plugged to the scoreline 4-0. There is a lean patch and the turnaround some would expect to happen only if everybody would apply to the role assigned to them. Lean patch every team goes through and it should not be taken as a setback. Team members should eat slowly and not laugh while taking meals.
As for Brand India campaign terminating the contract of the gentleman was a bad idea. Already the community is shocked over the range of developments in the past three to four months.If a member of the community speaks out a series of hate mails are pressed into service. And herein most observers would say no such contract termination should have happened.  Authorities of the day have to be careful in negotiating different terrain and any needless controversy should be avoided. As for Keshari dal (pulses) the ban should continue.
When news channels  unfurl programmes like "Bada Khulasa" "Band Kamre ka Raj" they are bound to create more nuisance, more law and order problem. News channels should rise to the occasion and try to stay away from fly by night stunts.

TV Channel Broadcasting from Japan
One tv channel broadcasting from Japan had a story on new generation of returnees who flock to Vietnam. The story was from Ho Chi Minh City. THis was quite informative. And it showed the rise in two-wheelers across the city something hard to find when we visited the great city in November 1995.And so much has changed since then. And right now Vietnam Congress is holding its session in Hanoi. Equally informative was the story of putting 10 tunnel section in the sea bed linking ASian side of Turkey to European side of Turkey. THe underground rail section in Turkey was accomplished with quite a few challenges by a team from Japan. Besides they show three-day weather outlook for cities ranging from Istanbul, Jerusalem, Moscow, Vienna, Berlin, London, Paris, Rome, Cairo, Dakar, Lagos, Marrakech, Harare, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Buenos Aires, Lima, Mexico, Hong Kong, Beijing, Islamabad, Delhi to Mumbai.

Snowiest Region and storm water drains in Tamil Nadu
Japan is one of the world's snowiest nations and in mountain regions where there is snow everywhere there are waterways and to irrigate farms water flows through these waterways and it also helps the snow to melt. THat brings us to storm water drains in the city of Chennai. These drains were blocked and rush of water from lakes and reservoirs added to the discomfort. Had these storm water drains in the city of Chennai been operational, the floods would have been contained to a large extent. THe floods in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Villupuram and Kancheepuram could have been contained had there been proper planning when constructions in different colonies were envisaged say 15 to 20 years ago. The storm water drains need to be desilted and enough passage needs to be provided for water to flow. Unemployment is still a big issue in Tamil Nadu and there is a sizeable section vying for opportunities. None of the political blocks have been able to address the issue.

THe ride from Somnath; the stay in Dwarka

THe ride from Somnath was accomplished in a mini bus. Though you could not stretch much, the plush seats made the ride ok.THe bus left at 2.20 in the afternoon. The roads were sparsely populated with vehicle density next to nothing. What to talk of pollution there were not enough vehicles to bring that about. It was Altaf of Paavan tours and travels who told me that people known to him or his relations run Kailash Hotel in Somnath. With enough water to be dispensed with, including warm water buckets, the plea was meant to try this place at least in future. Altaf showed me a message wherein a Kolkata tourist group was meant to visit Somnath and he was supposed to suggest the sights to be explored and the places to be tried. In Shivam Hotel the day we moved in we came across a WEst Bengal tourist group hailing from Kolkata. This group and another West Bengal group that came the day we left brought their kitchen with them. A cook and different set of utensils and vegetables they carried with them and this proved handy.

As the mini bus from Somnath left a little before half past two it was out on a road that seemed to be outright smooth with sensible movement of whatever little vehicles we came across. THere was no need for even-odd policy to be applied here as the places where it has been deployed there is an urgent need for the same. It should be adhered to in letter and spirit as it conveys we have the aptitude to be on the right side of the law. THough it may cause not that noticeable inconvenience, it should be applied in toto whenever the need arises. There were voices which had begun to spell a loomy picture but that was not the case to be.

As for the ride from Somnath, first, Dwarka is shown to be 232kms followed at 2.45 to be 209kms. A four lane road which for a little spell turns out to be two lane, the roads are steady and safe. Apart from oranges and apples which galore, there is plenty of land which is fertile enough to raise a toast to the agricultural strides recorded in this part of the state.   At 3.08 Dwarka is shown to be 195kms with enough sighting of bridges underneath of which there would have been water at some point of time. Ice cream parlours and fruit carts are not hard to locate. Balej at 4.23, Gosa check post at 5.11 and Porbandar at 5.30 are other notable destinations. At 5.32 Dwarka is shown to be 103 and Rajkot 181 kms. Near MD Science College and HMP Sports Club there is little pollution but not the one seen in the national capital or other shores. Besides sighting of windmills there were no episodes of road rage or one on short fuse witnessed in metropolis and other big cities of the country. That had a lot to do with little traffic and the people as effervescent as ever.  It was during this ride we came across Ranjan of West Midnapore, West Bengal  headed towards Mithapur to establish a cooling plant. How much that State would have realised investments over a period of time is debatable with the city of Kolkata seeing little efforts in streamlining traffic movements.

We finally reach Dwarka a little after half past eight in the evening.  Checking in Balaji Bhawan, the stay in the lodge was for two days. THe staff that comprised two boys were not eager to help in taking a baggage to the room or arranging tea at the room. Except for Sunday night when the staff from Krishna Vijay tea centre provided tea, on all other occasions we had to arrange tea ourselves. WE meet Kishore Barai of City Palace who runs the hotel we stayed in Somnath.

THe sleep that we secured in Somnath for two nights was sound and complete. And herein with little effort we tried to secure the same. On Sunday night we take meals from Annapoorna Bhojanalaya. Monday we settle for tea from Krishna Vijay Hotel. After securing tickets from a ticket counter in Dwarkadish temple complex, we head to the temple and from there to Nageshwar. It is in Chandubhai's auto we take the ride, the stay in Nageshwar lasting a little over half an hour. While returning to Dwarka we come across a railway crossing from which a little earlier a train had departed and Chandubhai could not hold himself from observing that it was none other than a Bombay bound train(bombay now called mumbai). Here the connectivity by train is at the most to fewer destinations like Ahmedabad and Mumbai with a weekly train ride to Varanasi and Rameswaram.

Chandubhai the automan was cooperative to a large extent  Later from Dwarka we head towards Okha with two men from the department in ace vehicle.  One among them seated next to me continuously sneezes.For 20-odd minutes he sneezes He does not keep hand to his nose. The ride is not good but the man at the wheels Bharat is reasonable.By the time we reach Okha it is already three in the afternoon.In Okha the tea one made by Kadabhai and other made by Baluba is something to cherish. The tea made by Baluba turns out to be the best in the street that runs parallel to Okha railway station. THe metalled road the residents tell me has come up in the past six months. Rajeshbhai of Mukesh Vasan Bhandar and Vijaybhai of Vaishali Pani and cold drinks look cheerful. Late in the evening settle for meals from Shri Vallabh Restaurant on Jodha Manek Road in Dwarka Some among the staff working there hail from Rajasthan. The meals have their own flavour and the newly opened Shri Vallabh Restaurant  could see more crowd with the passage of time.
On Tuesday afternoon after taking meals set out for railway station and the road the automan takes is the one that heads towards railway crossing. And herein the Advent  cinema hall is nowhere to be seen as another structure has come up. Advent cinema hall was doing pretty well when we visited in the past.At Dwarka railway station no porters are to be found. Same is the story in Rameswaram, Madurai and Veraval where porters are hard to come by.


TV Channels we watch

The channels we watch are from cnn, nhk world from Japan mega tv makkal tv, jaya tv, ndtv, aljazeerah, samaya news (Kannad), colors gujarati, ETV andhra to ETV Telugu. In GTPL in Gujarat they show SVBC channel, the channel showing programmes of Tirumala on number 591. Here in the national capital the SVBC channel used to come on 621. For over one and a half years it has been discontinued. In Gujarat those hailing from the South are fairly less and still they show the SVBC channel. In the national capital the things are not that smooth with an air arrogance to be seen here and there.

The Bihar outcome

The Bihar outcome rested on three factors; perhaps more than that. No polls in the country can be won without taking minorities into confidence. And that does not mean appeasing them. THey need to be provided education, skill development and involvement in other vocations that leads to a sizeable contribution by them towards society.  THe three factors that could be zeroed in are first, the turnout, second the ability to stick together (for alliance partners and their ability to speak in one voice)  and third not to mention your opponents in your speech repeatedly as that has the tendency for the other side to pick up more seats. In July-Aug period getting to three figure mark (assembly seats) looked probable by September a little difficult by October increasingly impossible and in November this figure was nowhere in sight.

The statements/outbursts by members of upper house/lower house and ministers were too controversial to be deemed fit in public parlance. "Sarkar jantar mantar se nahi chalti hai""Patakein padoshi desh mein phatenge" were enough to spell they themselves doubted their chances at the hustings . Oh ho there is growing intolerance felt by some because ed notice has been received and giving the dadri incident a different colour were enough to offend the voters. There should have been outright condemnation of Dadri incident but that was not the case to be. It took more than one month for outright condemnation as they believed the incident had taken place in a state not ruled by them.

If the ruling party had reined in fringe elements, reined in those speaking out of turn and those giving reckless statements in Dadri and beyond now and then at least a difference could have been made to the tally. THe likes of yogi, sakshi had a free run. The issue of allotment of ex prez  house could have been taken up at some other time. Issuing the house to those making reckless outbursts was meant to harm the party which they did not realise as they were of the view that consolidation of votes from other community is happening thick and fast. One assumed that areyesyes would at least ensure consolidation of hindu votes. But that was not the case to be. Minorities for which the grand alliance group has done no wonders was clever enough to not mention them in their speech and this was enough for minorities to affirm faith in them . Brandishing this set of paper and that set of paper saying GA group had advocated taking away reservation from one community to another was enough to spell a loomy picture. The GA Group was clever enough to not  rake up this reservation issue of being given to another community and this again lent them their support. And the day the results are to be out, the department men go past our residence at five in the morning and pass filthy abuse. This has become a pattern.

THe GA group has not realised that madrasas mushrooming across the state have on occasions strayed from their path. Primarily it has used minorities as a votebank and this has been seen to be a successful experiment to date. If the party /group wishing to gain power in Bihar kept its leaders away from reckless statements , projected four to five leaders in the hoardings and talked about constituency wise issue, things could have been better. To talk about electricity when that particular constituency has power or to talk about education when the area has achieved a feat in the same showed the top leadership had not taken the local leadership into confidence and had constituency wise speeches been made a definite difference to the tally would have been made.

THe final tally suggested the GA's success in getting the minorities to vote for them, the state residents approval of an arrangement where menfolk go out of the state to work. The Bihar verdict is a lesson for the party not able to gain power and for GA to work with an open mind.  AS for the talks the best option would have been to postpone them; stretch it as far as possible. Forces which came from across the border are hard to keep a tab on and one has to be vigilant all the time.

DEcember and January are difficult months to negotiate.
AS December drew to a close, there was respite from cold spell. But 31st onwards, in the national capital the cold spell has returned. The Sun is not out for days together. And herein the sunshine in Somnath Dwarka Nageshwar and Okha is something to be written about.

On a Monday had the opportunity to visit Okha. In Main bazar Okha we come across

Here in Okha we come across Vijay, the scooterman. Near the railway station there is Dwarkesh dinning hall and a sbi passbook printing kiosk. In Okha station ahmedabad is shown to be  499kms, jamnagar 168kms. The station is fairly clean. There is a train going towards Palitana, another is okha- varanasi train.

Leave Okha at 4.40. At 4.42 we are in bet dwarka. THere is a board "Okha nagarpalika sabhi yatriyo ka hardik swagat karti hai." Soon we come across Assistant garrison engineer (navy) okha military engineering services. This is followed by temporary settlements with chakda, the main mode of transport parked nearby followed by permanent settlements. Flags flutter for half a km followed by a sea view. There is a Naval Park Officers Mess. There is barren piece of land after naval park. There is GIDC board followed by a series of shops, establishments and houses. There is Krishna paan ghar. We reach Mithapur at 4.55 pm.
THere is Balaji paani puri centre cart, jodiyar masala dosa cart, azad paani puri centre cart. Nearby is a small goddess temple. From here nageswar temple is shown to be 12kms away with a road going inside. At 5.05 we reach Tata Chemical Ltd. There is a bust of jamshedji tata. TATA Leadership with Trust is etched on a wall. At 5.10 we come across a  railway crossing. We go past Mojap at 5.20, Varvala at 5.26, Rukmani at 5.30 and reach Dwarka at 5.32.

THe tea from Shiv hotel made by Kadabhai is great and so is the tea made by Baluba. Both these tea centres are in Okha. As for eating joint in Dwarka, Annapoorna Bhojanalaya run by Prakashbhai has an appeal of its own. The tea made by Javed in Somnath, the tea from Mukta ben tea centre in Somnath were equally strong.

Having stayed in Somnath for two nights and a little over two days it was time to move to a new destination. WE could not meet Ali Ahmedbhai this time as Mushtaq told me that he was away to Surat to attend Urs. It was Rehman who took me in his auto to a place where private buses depart for various destinations.The conductor  and driver seem to be in fairly bad mood. "Utar da Chu" was all they were uttering directed at me as i contested the seat allotted to me on travel receipt was 12 and they were asking me to take a seat just behind the driver. I detested the move as it meant trouble for me. It was warm out there in Somnath and i took two bottles of soft drinks to negotiate the heat.Fifteen rs for kaanch ka bottle and 20rs for plastic bottles of soft drinks. THe bus leaves at 2.20. A little further Dwarka is shown to be 232kms and Bhavnagar 264kms.

THere is a fair degree of green belt and no sooner we come across huge Coconut plantation. WE come across Tantivela bus stop followed by a hoarding at 2.45 showing dwarka 209 and rajkot 171kms. Further ahead there is coconut plantation followed by resorts. Is there a need for such resorts is all we could think about at this moment. WE are on a four lane road. Around 2.48 there are apples and oranges in plenty as we come across old set of shops. Later we turn left and there are series of shops followed by barren land.At 2.53 there is a  boundary wall encircled coconut plantation with Dwarka showing to be 208 kms. WE go past Jai bhavani mandir with an old man on a bench watching movement of traffic. There is Krishna English medium school and on yorward road there is mahadev mandir. We come across Dhirubhai hirchand ambani dwar. At 3.12 Dwarka is shown to be 195 and at 3.08 and 3.15 there are bridges underneath of which there would have been water at some point of time. The road by and large is fairly good. 

At 3.15 Dwarka is190 kms and at 3.20 we are in  Mangrol. At 3.25 there is a little bad road followed by a good one and the indian oil outlet where the bus stops for fuel is fairly big and clean. At an ice cream parlour a minority boy is at work next to which there is a board of momai ice cream. Soon we come across a minority man selling apples and oranges.

At 3.30 we come across a  madrasa and here our thoughts go towards the goals the madrasas are meant to deliver. To impart education, to provide skill development and see to it that education, skill development are such in a way that youngsters secure gainful employment. If not employment at least a commitment towards endeavours that leads to gains in society.  Soon Dwarka is shown to be 185kms and we come across New Varam baug and nursery. At  3.33 there is sighting of barren land followed by a sign of slow driving. There is  parmeshwar house next to which is a hanuman etched on a wall with not that clean surroundings. Another Indian oil outlet is found to be clean.

At 3.45 Porbandar is 70 km and there is another set of shops. At 3.50 we come across  fertile agriculture land lasting for a fairly long, long duration. At 3.54 Junagadh district limit ends. At 4 Dwarka is 163 and Porbandar  59kms. At 4 .07 there is sighting of windmills. At 4.08 on other side of road Somnath is shown to be 79 kms away. At  4.08 there is a coastal check post PATA. A small road goes besides. Soon after there is a warning Drive Slow Weak Bridge.  We reach Balej  at 4.23 and come across at 4.27 some construction. At 4.42 the marking on the road is on the left for going towards Dwarka and Porbandar. At 4.50 we reach mata ka mandir. At 5.11 we come across Gosa check post. Near Sauken Club there is a small hanuman temple fairly clean. At  5.30  we reach Porbandar. From here Somnath 132 and Madhavpur 56kms. At 5.32 Dwarka is103 and Rajkot 181kms. 
Besides a board of Get your dream job talented people, we come across dream world play house. The air is thick with pollution and as we turn right there is MD Science College, HMP Sports Club. Nearby there is a defunct rail line. The place where the bus stops to take in more passengers in Porbandar we come across vendors selling Matla kulfi . At 5.55 we reach Bokhira. Again at  6.15 there is sighting of windmills. At 6.22 we reach mool dwarka dham, a  very energetic place. At 6.50 we reach harsiddhi mandir the name of the place we can't figure out. Here we show gratitude towards the  shiv shakti novelty store man for handing us change. We leave the place at 7.05. We are finally in Dwarka a little after half past eight.

In Dwarka we come across

Khusboo store, lakshmi novelty store, krishna kangan store, gandhi store, mahaveer medical store, bhavesh novelty store, jamnadas haridas bataviya store for key chain
There is a board of SPT surrounds with sea facing rooms, shivam pan and cold drinks, mukeshbhai bandhaniwala jamnagarwala, bhrahnani city centre for audio cassettes, Shri Vallabh restaurant, Jalaram tours & travels, English foundation course basic and advanced reading, writing, grammar.

The stay in Dwarka was for two days and it was fairly smooth. The order inside the temple is something to be cherished.
