Republic Day Parade over the years: Bringing the new to mainstream

Republic Day Parade over the years

REpublic Day Parade is one among different efforts to illustrate the unity in diversity as an enduring template. Representations from states to union territories with a thick rush of public to the venue emboldens the common perception that this ritual is to be religiously followed year after year. Participation hasn't dwindled over the years if not multiplied. Those young, old and with enormous hope throng the venue with a commitment to watch the parade and a wish to attend the following years.

There are different blocks with different energy, some getting a vantage platform to witness and some managing to get all-that-they-could-manage at that point of time. Participation of public could well be over 40 to 50, 000 with those managing through a republic day parade pass and those purchasing a ticket evenly split. Yet the enormity of getting early on a cold foggy morning coupled with reaching the venue a good two to three hours before the start of the parade deters many to watch from the comforts of their homes. Yet all don't get the opportunity to watch. The parade starting from Rajpath and coming to an end in Red Fort could well be made more approachable if giant screens could be placed near Red Fort as all across the venue security considerations may not permit them.

On this day those manning the security and those overwhelmed with the task of seeking a clean and tidy preparations have to be good in conduct and never on a short fuse. Because the public comes from across the country spending enough from their pocket and seeking an approach that does not upset them. There could well be a draw of lots for 5000-odd seats around the country with those emerging triumphant getting a chance to watch the Parade with travelling expenses being taken care of by the govt. Those staying in remote areas and areas that feel detached, the draw of lots could do wonders.

Parades happen in other states and union territories side by side and those who have marked attendance for five consecutive sessions could win direct entry to National Capital Parade. Perhaps from the remote areas and those where a sense of governance is yet to make an impact, the public could well be cajoled to join  the National Capital celebration. This could well serve as an opportunity to engage them on what shortcomings define their territories and how could disconnected could be brought to the mainstream. Not to be dismissed as an annual ritual the parade posts an opportunity to raise the energy bar and connect with those who haven't travelled in trains and cars. Theme for different displays could well be how to use the resources to the optimum and those who have gained maximum should make way for those who could take a drop of the sum. Hail the Parade and hail those coming from varied frontiers and changing shores. Lores depicting their tales and triumph need to be told and retold.Young and energetic, teen and therapeutic, all mark their presence with a vow to not throw away their common sense. Hail the Parade and hail the gates that welcome them.
