The visit to Delhi Cantt Railway Station on a Friday

The visit to Delhi Cantt Railway Station

It was on a  Friday i decided to visit Delhi Cantt Railway Station. While walking to the bus stand i came across Mr Surendra who makes his ends meet by dispensing pigeon feed. As usual he was at his best. A man of simple nature and simple deeds. Reached Nauroji Nagar bus stand and boarded a bus number 724 at 1 pm. Mr Ajeet Kumar was the bus conductor who was kind enough to give me change and broached on subjects as varied as free travel to women in DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) buses to those availing pass to make their travel more comfortable. At South Campus bus stand a large number of students boarded the bus and it was choc-a-block with passengers. There was a caution thrown around as far as women safety was concerned. There was a message in the bus to not misbehave with women passengers. There are marshals in the bus. That reminded one of air marshals taking their seats in planes and how sincere and adept (capable) they were at their task, primarily meant to thwart any hijacking or untoward incident. They better not be drunk and be alert to the proceedings.

Reached Delhi Cantt Railway Station at 1.37, Janak Setu is the bus stand for this station which is on a flyover. Mind you enough repairs have been carried on this flyover at different points of time. How steady is the structure not known. Having deboarded i set out in search for tea and tea vendor whom i met in early part of this year. I was not able to trace him and it was Mr Naresh Kumar who ran a tea stall opposite Paytm payments bank. This tea vendor was kind enough to hand over a set of black tea.

While crossing tracks came across a sole engine bearing number 16773. The station had a modern look as far as the place from where platform tickets are dispensed. The system was down and it took over 10 minutes before tickets could be dispensed. It was Ms Rupinder Kaur who handed over ticket and there was another woman who went by the name Ms Yamini.

The screen that radiated the timings of different trains was functioning and what all i could gather was the following. 09731 Jaipur Delhi Cantt Special arrived on PF (Platform) 1 at 1.20 pm, Delhi-Rajkot Express arrived at 1.37, Ala Hazrat Express arrived at 1.44 on PF 2, 19407 Ahmedabad Varanasi Express arrived at 1.57 on PF 2 (it has four set of AC coaches as well as Deen Dayalu coach), 14545 Farukhnagar Shahranpur Express arriving at 2.12 on PF 2. Delhi-Rewari Passenger arriving on PF 1 at 2.20, Delhi Jaipur Express departure at 3 pm, 12916 Ashram Express arriving at 3.48 on PF 1, 12066 Jan Shatabdi Express arriving at 4.30 on PF 1.

As one enters PF 1 there are new sets of seats/benches, more passenger friendly. The platform is squeaky clean.

The LED screen that are positioned at different places has enough messages concerning the common man. Be a part of Railways' Journey To Eliminate Corruption. Do not tolerate any type of corrupt practice. How much the common man adheres to this necessity/rule is not known. The screen lays emphasis on UTS on Mobile (Book paperless ticket through UTS Mobile app) . The steps six in all are as follows
- Download the app
- Go to app and register yourself
- Recharge your R wallet
- Book Ticket
- Select
- Show Ticket

Another message is on Dawn of a Swachh Bharat With A Clean Railway Journey. As i am supposed to leave the station i come across a large number of passengers boarding train number 74003 from Delhi Junction to Rewari Junction. There are no less number of passengers wishing to board Delhi Jaipur Special which is standing at PF 3 and supposed to depart at 3 pm. There is a poster of Electricity Saving Week from Dec 7 to Dec 14. How much is procured and how much is saved is difficult to spell.

From Janak Setu i hailed an auto driven by Mr Vipin and the auto was at a breakneck speed which most passengers would not have desired. In under 30 minutes i was at my place. This visit to Delhi Cantt Railway Station happenned after nine months and over this period there was a makeover which one could identify with.
