Meeting those hailing from Ladakh , North east

Meeting those hailing from Ladakh , North east

On different outings in the national capital we came across people hailing from Ladakh and North East. Met Rin Chen from Ladakh who probably runs a resort who told me that inner line permit has been done away with for going to Disket. Mr Chen was of the view that Ladakh Hill Council is able to employ a large number of people from the region and this is a major turnaround. Met one gentleman who is part of faculty in South Campus. Met another gentleman who teaches mathematics in a college of north campus. Both hail from Mizoram. Met two students from Manipur who were taking coaching from a centre in north delhi for civil services. Commuting by metro they have had a mixed experience.
A couple from Assam, working in a private bank, a manipur guy pursuing Msc from a college in North Campus, the interactions have ranged from the need to give respect to every community irrespective of their numbers to maintaining cleanliness all around.  If clean surroundings are not among different objectives we pursue we are not chasing right goals.

These department people

These department people are supposed to maintain law and order. In the name of maintaining law and order they create nuisance now and then. All across the country they have a poor track record as far as sending fringe elements to play spoilsport is concerned. Their track record in making their men or boys spit or pass filthy abuse has only grown over the years. On january one as we hailed an auto from Patel Chowk metro station in the national capital from nowhere came an autowallah and he spitted with full venom. THis autowallah was no one else than one belonging to their department. This is how they welcomed January One near Parliament Street Police Station.
THese department men are a law unto themselves. It has been six to seven years these things are happening and no force on earth can mend them. We still can't forget the Ahmednagar experience and what is bothering them.
In the national capital they all started and this trend picked up in the entire country. Like the other day we went to a saloon and here one from a dog squad working in an embassy had taken a seat just before me. THe amount of vulgar abuse he engaged for the next twenty minutes, the duration i was inside the saloon, showed the reach of these department men. They would collect outside your home pass filthy abuse or come on foot or bike and pass filthy abuse. And they would dismiss all these acts as an act solemnised by public.

The ride to Somnath; the stay in Somnath

The ride to Somnath; the stay in Somnath

Having checked in a hotel in Khanpur Road in Ahmedabad, the first half of the day was spent in the room, fairly big. THe visit to Camp Hanuman  was accomplished in fareed bhai's auto, the return journey in jalabhai desai's auto. Both these automen radiated a confidence that we find on fewer occasions. It is during these rides i come across Spices of Awadh eating joint that has come up near relief road. In the evening leave for Ahmedabad railway station from where the Somnath Express departs from Platform 10 at 10.15.
Viramgam comes at 11.25, Surendranagar 12.55, Junagadh 4.35, Keshod around 6 and Veraval 6.50 am. In Veraval, there is Just one overbridge at the railway station and to access that from your coach one has to walk almost half a km. In view of this there are some who try to cross over to Platform One through tracks. There are no other overbridges and this situation does not look handy. Even porters are hard to find at Veraval railway station, the scene no better at Delhi Cantt station from where we boarded the train. IN the train we came across one Mr Parekh who has with new ideas as his assignment tool. The mandate of the firm, with new ideas, was to organise events that made the residents of the state seek tourism spots in the state itself instead of vying for other states/directions.A family with Junagadh as its destination was in the coach and so was another gentleman who had completed just under seven hours the ride from Veraval to Ahmedabad in the morning in a personal car and was returning to Veraval by the same train. Howsoever good the roads be, the frenetic speed at which the journey is accomplished should be avoided.

A scooter ride costing 100 rs takes me to Somnath Trust where i am told the room can be availed after 10. Better to seek accommodation in Hotel Shivam. Initially the room allotted had four beds to it, the same changed to two beds late in the evening. It was a Friday when we reached Somnath. A good part of the day was spent inside Somnath Temple. There is an order to the proceedings inside the temple that we all relish. Except for faint noises here and there there was enough momentum to the stay inside the temple. In the evening as i set out for accommodation point, the Bhabha restaurant opposite the hotel is the ideal point for meals.Curd from here is really good. Here a word of praise for Kadi Ben working in Shivam Hotel in Somnath, who radiated a different level of energy. Similar word of praise for Ameera Ben  working in Prakashbhai run bhojanalaya in Dwarka and Ram Jeswani in Ahmedabad. Ram Jeswani was helpful in dropping me to Ahmedabad railway station when we were stuck in relief road, a traffic jam that would have taken hours to disperse. His ability to navigate the narrow alleys next to relief road and confidence in reaching the station a little before the train was to depart could not be missed.

As for the stay in Somnath, there were enough meeting points and enough deliberations. As we head towards main bazar prabhas patan we come across
-South indian gujarati pav bhaji
- Way to shri somnath trust VIP guest house
- Gajanand Guest House
- Thakar Jayantilal Kantilal store
- Hotel metro
- Jai Bhavani Spoken English classes
- Shivam provision
- Anmol selection for ladies gents and children wear
-  Jay Bhavani computer classes
- Fair price shop sabji market
- Harsh computer
- Shiv shakti kirana bhandar
- Prince jewellers
- Somnath cloth store
- Karan collection
- Rameswar Hindu Hotel
- Raj medical store, neeldeep chemist, saurashtra provision store
- Sabri general store run by ahmad bhai

In shopping complex we come across
- Mahaveer restaurant
- Somnath bhel house
- shiv shakti restaurant
- madhav tours and travels
- bhuvaneswari tea centre
- Goswami book store
- Yatrik tours and travels
Near SBI ATM near Bhabha restaurant there is Mukta Ben running a tea centre cha doodh coffee. The tea from mukta ben tea centre is something to write home about.  Ali the personnel at bhabha restaurant looked to be cheerful. Other staff at Bhabha restaurant looked equally cheerful The stay in Somnath was for three days, all days completed in the hotel which has Jawed and Jas as their personnel. Jawed with whom the interaction was long and liberating spoke in a tone that had a childish charm. The bhel from Somnath Bhel House was the best in the town and this time round i could not take tea from Bhuvaneswari tea centre , something i have repeatedly done in the past. Ahmad Bhai at Sabri general store could not be found as he had gone to attend Urs in Surat.

Somnath story done in 2012 vis-a-vis now
With a stay of three days given the rush that Somnath trust run guest houses were seeing was huge. One should lay stress on a room in old guest house as it comes for 350 rs and are spacious enough. You are lucky enough if you can get a room in the blocks that are adjacent to the somnath trust run bhojanalaya. The day i reached and waited for a room in 2012, i was amidst some who were prefering to reserve rooms in the new guest house that had recently come up. If i was not mistaken, there was a family comprising over five members and they had booked probably two to three rooms in the new airconditioned guest house and had paid 7400rs . Probably for each room the tariff may have been 1500 plus for a day with a sizeable surety. The gentleman who had come to book the rooms wanted to be doubly sure that ac rooms were being given to him and in response the trust people assured him of Double Airconditioning. The thought that could have crossed many would be the rationale for seeking such plush rooms in Somnath. There have been airconditioned rooms in the old guest house which came for 400 rs in 2007. Perhaps the ac rooms in the old guest house have been dispensed with and the ac facility comes in new guest house.

Apart from visiting the temple and roundabout the stay in Somnath saw me search for a cyber cafe which i discovered in Prabhas Patan. THis time too i could not access any other cyber point in shopping complex or roundabout.
Photographers who used to take pictures a few metres away from the temple have been clearly told  to stay away from the entry/exit gate and park themselves near the amul parlour. This time too elaborate iron railings have been put as a security measure and photographers have to operate from behind iron railings.

Reservation centre but no phone booths
Shree Somnath shopping centre has new signboards and some new shops. More merchandise stores have come up. THis time as well i could find an increase in the number of stores in function.
Absence of std/pco booth in the shopping centre has been hampering the smooth movement of devotees and others. Second there are no vegetable/fruit vendors in the shopping centre either. THis time as well we could not find any std/pco booth and in the shopping centre, the functioning of computerised railway reservation centre  is from 8a.m to 2 p.m.
AS for Dilsukh tea centre, Abbas the boy had gone to attend other chores when i visited the tea stall this time round. Sohaib was there at the counter.
The stay here for two nights and three days did not provide enough time to visit Veraval. Soaps of handy frame were found at Sabri store. On a Sunday left for a new destination.
THere was enough sunshine during the stay and no smog or pollution to even talk about.

Sunshine in Somnath

There is enough sunshine during the entire day in Somnath. THe hint of sunshine can be seen around 7-7.30 a.m. and by half past eight a continous pact with sunshine is established which lasts well beyond three. There could be chill in the weather but nothing of the sort that one experiences in the plains of the North. Sunshine which is extensive and elaborate nudges you to stay for a longer duration; the duration could be hours turning to days, days turning to weeks and beyond. The promise that this sunshine would come out of its hideout (or no hideout) each day is assidiously kept, something the metros of the north find it hard to keep, where sustained vehicular pollution adds to a smog and adds to a reality where the sun may not come out the entire day.
To talk about pollution and smog in this part of the world (Somnath and nearby places)  is beyond comprehension as neither exist or have a tendency to exist. One could fault the rising pollution and not that relenting smog for not being energetic enough to do daily chores in the north. Here in Somnath the fabric of the town is such that it does not let pollution and smog set in and this is enough to make you walk for miles together with no hint of sapping of energy. Minus vehicles of all shapes and sizes and lesser the crowd that takes out machines of pollution surprises, the weather is perfect to percolate down to the last layer.

The ride from Delhi to Ahmedabad

The ride from Delhi to Ahmedabad

On a Wednesday decided to board a train to Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Having procured train tickets through internet, the availability of a seat and the available train suggested i seek a premium tatkal ticket for Delhi-Ahmedabad section followed by a tatkal ticket for Ahmedabad-Somnath section. Having reached Delhi Cantt station by 11.30a.m., the Ashram express was supposed to leave from the station around 4pm and this time was utilised in a series of interactions with people across different spectrum.

Posted at Poonch-Rajouri sector
A Rajashthan bound train departed as i entered platform 1 after getting some queries cleared. Came across Asif and two other members from Bangalore who attended Urs in Bareilly and they were not lucky enough to be in time to catch the Rajasthan bound train. Having decided to take Ala Hazrat Express, they made themselves comfortable on the floor of the platform at a point where there is not much rush and fairly clean.  Came across a military personnel hailing from a place near Markana in Rajasthan and posted in Poonch Rajouri sector in J-K. As was evident from his tone and facial expression, the going in Poonch-Rajouri sector and other disturbed sectors across J-K isn't smooth and i thought if at this point of time one is thinking about reengaging through cricket ties it would be highly inappropriate. Situation along the border isn't normal and efforts should be to deescalate than look to a solitary voice here and there that talks rubbish if cricket is ever mentioned as a point of engagement. We came across another young guy working in Clark Inn, waiting to board a train to Alwar. Given the high tariff that the hotel was charging, and its location in Anand Vihar just under 10 kms from where another state (UP)border begins, it wasn't easy to fathom the high rates and their success in roping in high-end customers.

Civil services aspirant
WE came across another gentleman working in SAL Steel in Gandhidham who at some point of time gave a shot at civil services. Past prelims, the Mains happened to be the stumbling block. He was holding employment news newspaper, something we rarely come across these days. Those with whom we interacted felt enough had been spent on ads and access to these summits and meets; the time had come to show the ground results. Even Civil Services aspirants when successful in all three stages should be taken on contract. The amount of load the exchequer takes on account of salaries and pensions of government staff is huge and there has to be a way where contractual pact comes into place for certain percentage of civil servants.
On other scale we see huge sums being spent by states on summits and meets.  Whenever a State advertises on a summit or a meet, it should bear in mind the public money that is being spent and is it all that justified. Fiscal stress the govt's financial department is under and the obligations arising from Seventh Pay Panel recommendations makes the task more difficult. The govt should cut back on foreign travels by a huge margin whether by govt functionaries or those enjoying spg cover battery.  Political parties of any scale should rein in their party office bearers who take to air travel now and then. Air travel by party office bearers now and then is highly inappropriate

While in search for band aid took me to a medical store just after flyover in DElhi Cantt station, the young boy at the store and store owner looked to be polite and simple. It was Mohammad Zaheer, the scooterman, who took and brought me back to the railway station. At the station waiting room came across a driver of a goods train and a retired railway engineer. According to goods train driver, it took eight to nine hours for a goods train to reach DElhi from Agra(distance 180-odd kms), the same being three hours for a high speed passenger train. The lady making a noting of the passengers who took seats at the waiting hall was well mannered. Only if the bathroom at the waiting room could have a door to it.

The train ride
Ashram express leaves at 4 pm(wrist watch), gains traction. Palam comes at 4.05, at 4.07 poor visibility at air tarmac and runway.  At 4 10 bijawasan comes with a board that spells Jatar Panchayat Bhawan Shiv Mndir. The train slows down at bijawasan. Later gains traction. WE come across Ram Avatar, member of ticket checking squad who has spent his eventful years in railways. At 4.17 Gurgaon which looks to be fairly clean (Swachh bharat showing results) . But after the station there is filth around. Patli 4.33, Taj nagar 4.42, Rewari 5.15 Khairthal 6pm, Alwar 6.25, Dausa 7.50 and Jaipur 8.50. WE are told that arguments had turned nasty about a month ago so they have stopped serving tea and food when the train runs towards Ahmedabad.

WE collect food packets from Jaipur station, each coming for 130rs. By and large the food is good except for a vegetable that is soaked in oil and a gulab jamun that can be avoided. (Gulab Jamun is doing no good to anyone).  I requested the TTE to allot me inside lower or side lower berth as the berth no 6 happened to be side upper. I was allotted seat number 47 (side lower) next to the door. In train travelling try to insist (prevail on ticket agent or window ticket giver)on inside lower or side lower; definitely not the one that is next to the door. That on occasions shows the rough side of law and order as abuse flows in plenty by outsiders who don't have reserved tickets and yet take the seat meant for attendants. I pointed this out to a woman with a sprained leg who boarded the train at Alwar, allotted seat number 48, but she did not find this offensive.  Ajmer  comes at 10.55, Abu road 4.30am, Palampur 5.27 Siddhpur 5.50, Unjha 6.05, Mehsana 6.27 Sabarmati 7.25 and Ahmedabad 7.55. Came across Ankit Vyas who had come for all india meet of his company in New Delhi from Ahmedabad. THis meet happens every month in the national capital. Came across another guy who has migrated to Austalia, working in a hotel next to MCG. This gentleman boarded the train from Rewari. Came across Asif or Arif who had gone to Allahabad with his wife to attend a family function.  By and large the crowd inside the train looked to be relaxed and willing to get into different sets of interactions.

Reaching Ahmedabad
In Ahmedabad, Swaroop the porter, rahul the scooterman, fareedbhai, the scooterman, jalabhai desai, the scooterman and Munaf, the keychain maker in Salapose road looked to be humble and well mannered.   All in all, the train ride from DElhi to Ahmedabad was comfortable except for the fact that during night time when the train was at a high speed it seemed as if it would jump the tracks. THis thought may have been misplaced but the bitter truth is the tracks are under stress and the issue of creaking infrastructure, coaches and rail lines need  to be looked into.AS i reached Ahmedabad, i checked into Hotel Mukam where the counter staff and those working in kitchen had changed entirely except for Yousufbhai.

Meeting those hailing from Haiti, Bhutan and North East

Meeting those hailing from Haiti, Bhutan and North East

There have been occasions when we have come across residents hailing from Haiti and Bhutan. These residents have come on a training project which gives them the opportunity to gauge the sentiment prevailing in this part of the world. Commuting by metro, they have a mixed experience.

There have been umpteen occasions when we have come across students from the North East residing in the national capital of Delhi. They have a base in the heart of the city and that's the best part. A couple from Assam, working in a private bank, two students from Manipur taking coaching for civil services from a North DElhi Centre and two associate professors in DElhi University hailing from Mizoram. Interactions with them have ranged from the need to give respect to every community irrespective of their numbers to bringing sanity to the proceedings in the national capital.
Here in the national capital if you flip through the pages of newspapers you come across full page ads on a state seeking investments. It's a show of strength meant to showcase the strides they have recorded when in the name of development most claims don't have a ring of truth. What about MoUs worth million of rupees signed in the past and of that how much has been realised. Very negligible to say the least. The states across wide spectrum seek investments when attempts in the past have not delivered desired results.

Public money and party office bearers

Public money and party office bearers

Dissuade them (political party office bearers)from taking to travel by air at party expense. THere have been umpteen  occasions when party office bearers assignment or no assignment take to travel by air. This seminar or that party work which won't be significant enough to call for travel by air sees more of such practices by party office bearers setting in motion the clamour for same by those in the lower rung. Resentment is brewing in this state unit, disaffection has arisen all of a sudden in that state unit, We have to travel from national capital to sort out the matter is the common refrain. This is all waste of public money when a mere telephone call would do.  Entirely unconnected to this is an issue of modernisation of airports and the private concerns which won the bid including in the metros. It was believed, reported to a fair extent, that private concerns which went on to raise and run the big airports had to shell out huge sums to the authorities/regime in power. As a result, they piled up huge debt and this having spillover effect to other frames of economy. If these concerns had not been told to fork out huge sums at least a degree of honesty would have been registered and other doors of economy would have opened with least bottlenecks and least greasing of palm.

Political parties in power and those aspiring to gain power have to exercise checks and balances when it comes to party work/assignment and whom all to send and the occasion if at all calls for travel by air. WE come across instances where calls are made regularly to donate to the party kitty to see the expenses that a political party bears are met. It was reported widely that even before the poll fever had set in 2007 in UP close to 200cr were spent to demonstrate that young leadership had won the hearts and minds of  the people. Being garlanded at every other minute, being showered with rose petals, the convoy being stopped here and there was meant to show the leadership had the pulse of the electorate. When the polls were over, the party could not register a win.
As for ads during different anniversaries of leaders, the newspapers across states are flooded with them. Why spent such huge sums when the same effort could be utilised to raise a medical facility in far away districts/ remote districts of a state/country.This exercise of placing ads is a sheer wastage of public money. These occasions are meant to show they are very much relevant in the political landscape of the country.   Similarly when employment is a big issue, most of the leaderships from Bengal, Assam , DElhi went to Gandhi Maidan in Bihar during swearing -in ceremony only to attest the fact there is no bar on travel by political leadership to any part of the country. THese travels were on public money.  Bihar elections showed the departure from real issues and talking about tantra mantra, personal attacks, straying from real agenda and not sticking to the state issue and keeping the speech short and to the point cost them(party making an attempt to gain power) dear. What law and order turn the state would witness would be known soon but the state is in the grip of a caste calculus and this percolates down to the bottom, hitting the very fabric of governance. No poll can be won when minorities don't wait and vote for you. This does not mean the other alliance has done wonders for minorities. THe party in power in the state has used minorities as votebanks. If they had really cared for minorities at least in madrasas in the state  the young lot should have been provided education, skill development and a path that would have glided them towards gainful employment. One page insertions in different newspapers like leaflets in minority dominated constituencies in the state which carry reports of how minorities are gaining skill, gaining employment and same being spread through word of mouth could bring a sense of belongingness to the minorities. THis one page insertion could be carried out in the entire country in the districts where minorities have a sizeable presence.
THe bus permits, the number of buses to be run on such and such route, the roads that need recarpeting are some among million areas that could see rise or reinvention of graft. Giving tenders to those hailing from one caste or one group would further see the strong grip of caste calculus in the state..

House sitting too is on public money and if there are disagreements, the attempt should be to thrash out the same than adjourning the House. Even if marshals are required for the same it could be tried. House sitting during two session than three would do.
IN the national capital, the attempt should have been to streamline the functioning of different govt hospitals. About 10 months ago when the new regime came in the national capital, a detail list of different govt hospitals and the staff reporting for same should have been prepared. This should have been followed by a list of doctors, nurses who all needed to be recruited in different hospitals followed by the list of equipments that needed to be supplied to these govt hospitals. A detail follow up would have improved the functioning of these hospitals. Why not draw up a list of hospitals in the national capital of delhi and recruit the doctors/nurses based on feedback from the hospital. THis is more important than make a claim that 10,000 new buses would hit the road of the national capital of delhi when there is no space for the same. This would further create law and order problem as we all know from where trouble begins. Similarly the elevated road corridor on the outskirts of capital that could prevent the trucks/buses from entering the heart of the capital (this would check pollution) should be the priority than placing ads in electronic media  and print media about how different they are from others. Giving priority to govt hospitals is more important than getting influenced by surveys that show private medical care is doing wonders when very few can afford it. At all major railway stations, bus terminals of the national capital there could be at least one kiosk on providing information on availability of beds in govt hospitals and the doctors who could be of help to you. Because those coming from outside have to run here and there to get medical care when the requisite information they seek does not come.

Seventh Pay Panel
AS for the seventh pay panel, reports in the papers suggest that before its implementation over 4lakh 30, 000 crore goes toward salaries and pension of central govt staff including railways every year. After its implementation the Centre would have to bear a burden of over 1 lakh crore in the first year. This steep hike of over 23 per cent can't be justified and yet the party making an attempt to gain power suggests the hike should have been 40 per cent. Private companies are in huge debt, salaries are being slashed like anything and yet the pay panel set up by the previous regime sees merit in raising the pay and that too by such a margin. Pay panel should come every 15 years, not 10. THe ability of the govt to dole out such huge sums can be questioned given the financial landscape we are in when taxes of different nature haunt us.IN the West when the govt has failed to honour commitments towards salaries/pension disturbing trends have emerged.

A recent meet of investors in the western state saw the electronic media being splashed with an ad "Hum hai tayar" was sheer wastage of public money. THe state has least employment rate. The meet won't raise emloyment. This ad should have run  at the most for a week prior to the investor meet than running for over 40 days.
Most would agree that public money can't be wasted on ads in print and electronic media. Another ad that shows "yeh doodh peeta hai india" looks inflammatory and repulsive THe ads on super bikes super cars splashed in papers and electronic media are nothing but an attempt to create stir in the society.

Sightings in Puri

Sightings in Puri

Station is choc-a-bloc with passengers when more than one train arrives at the same time or arrival or departure of trains are close to each other. Outside station vendors could be spotted selling their wares and a sorry sight is of garbage that piles up. Perhaps some renovation work of flattening the ground is underway and this part of the space could be utilised to accommodate vendors who are literally on road. As for the book store in the station, on occasions the long meal break time can dislodge your efforts to secure the publication of your choice. Staff is good but the meal break time can go beyond one hour.

The stay in Puri was for 10 days. Pooja lodge appeared to be the best bet and the adjoining cafeteria in Sarada lodge run by Sushant was a big advantage.   Rama ballav road was all dug up and it would require months' efforts to restore it back to its glory. There is only big college , SCS College. A young boy residing in the area said people from different places come to Puri but students of the town have to flock to different parts of the country to seek higher education and probable levels of employment. Higher education and extension is something Puri has been denied all these years leading to a large flow of students to other urban centres. Though coaching centres have dotted the landscape, Puri Zila School 1853 remains an important landmark.

Ride from bhubneswar to puri

ride from bhubneswar to puri

While waiting for Dhouli Express coming from Howrah and going towards Puri PLatform 1 presented a picture of calm and cool. The Train is supposed to come by 12.30; train timing is reset to 2.30, 3.30 and finally at 4.15 pm. Different vendors could be seen at work in pf 1 which also has CTI office and an office on Odisha tourism. During the wait announcements are made for Rourkela intercity, dhouli (going towards Howrah), Puri Passenger and Konark express to Mumbai.

Dhouli express  leaves at 4.35; gains traction/ speed at 4.37, linga station 4.42, slows down at 4.43. From 4.43 agricultural land we come across; at 4.47 gains traction. At 4.52 we reach retang station; later spot a young guard in yellow outfit.  At 4.54 we see a green bike at a railway crossing.

THe wait here is long as two trains go past us, puri- durg and puri-ahmedabad. Finally at  5.58 leave sakhigopal station;  at 6.15 we are in malatipatpur station. From 6 pm onwards we see a good number of labourers at work. Finally we are in Puri at 6.25. On way to puri  we come across new tracks, new flyover and new constructions

The stay in Puri was for 10 days having had the opportunity to stay in three different lodges. First point of stay was in Anjaana lodge on Gopal Ballav road. This was followed by Pooja lodge in Sarada DEvi Road and Baikuntha Dham on Dola Mandap Sahi. REached Puri on a SAturday evening and left the town on a Monday. Among the three lodges Pooja presented a picture of calm and quietness. THe stay in the first lodge was ok except for repeated queries on when the room would be vacated. THe delivery boy in Pooja lodge could not entertain the request of getting a newspaper from a hawker as he found going all the way to station to be a tad difficult. SAturday, Sunday, Thursday and Monday were the days when we visited the Puri temple; the rush was managed with utmost precision. Earlier the entry to the temple was from left side and nowadays they had switched to an entry from right and that too after a session of frisking. Earlier the visits did not witness any session of frisking.
Sarada lodge which is next to Pooja lodge came handy as far as meals were concerned. Subha Shree , a shop in Mahodadhi market, Mochi Sahi, came handy for handkerchiefs.  The entire stay in Puri saw me visit different cyber cafes, notably dotcom and gen nxt.

From gopal ballav road as you reach mochi sahi square,  one road goes towards dola mandap sahi; other road goes towards anna tiffin centre from where you turn right you reach hostel square and the road on the left is college road leading to college and on right the road leads to beach. FRom Hostel square road  as you reach College road, you have to turn right to reach Rama Ballav Road; this was all dug up and perhaps it would take some months before a well carpeted road is set. Rama Ballav Road has a charm of its own.

Reaching  Bhubaneswar

There are two swarna lodging points in Bhubaneswar. First is in the vicinity of times lodge. The entry to this lodge has a ganesha in black illustration. The staff is more eager to accommodate you, nothing to separate you and the lodge even if one has not turned up with entire bag and baggage and with other team members . THe second lodge which also has a dining hall is swarna lodging and restaurant. This is on main road of Ashok Nagar.
Swarna lodging and restaurant appeared to be the best bet as far as snacks and meals were concerned. The staff courteous and the food on offer  very close to your expectations.
Tea prepared from a makeshift camp near times lodge was good.  Digamber making tea looked to be blessed. Digamber was frank enough to admit he had studied till 10th standard.

As for other sightings in Bhubaneswar

Shri Kunj  ashok nagar raj mahal square

In  palika bazar we come across

-shree jagannath auto works

THe day we reached Bhubaneswar, the man hailing from Jajpur was kind enough to guide us to Times lodge. Times lodge is next to Sambit Palace. AS for cash deposit machines of SBI, a thorough search could not provide an outcome where cash accepting machines were truly functional. FRom Rabindra Mandap to SBI main branch, the machines could not carry out cash-accepting functions. Finally had to settle for SBI main branch the next day for cash to be deposited.

In SBI main branch as you wait for cash to be deposited you come across a notice on proof of identity and proof of address. These could be
- passport - pan card - driving licence - voter id card - aadhar letter - nrega job card

Further there is a display board showing
ticket  counter

As for the ride to Bhubaneswar the originating point was Delhi.

As you enter delhi airport there is baker street serving

the great shakes

there is indusbank atm

airtel payphone (working during that time)

And there is toilet on extreme side

- united colour of benetton
- ethos
-swrovski
-cellar
-starbucks tata alliance

Indubala devi and pawan yadav in security appeared to be at a comfort level. Indubala devi hails from northeast and she seem to be enjoying her stint in the security section of airport..
In flight you meet cabin crew member from ziro district of arunachal pradesh. From flight you can see tanker of indian oil aviation  "our ground work takes you sky high." Further to be spotted is a flyover. The aircraft moves at 4.26 pm going past bharat petroleum, HP aviation. Come across airport hotel where some construction is going on. Go past four hangars, some meant for Boeing 737 A320.  At 4.29 jet lands, 4.35 indigo lands and at 4.36 the flight takes off. First goes west and then turns east. Down below spot a series of flats, dtc bus depot; going from dwarka side see the final resting point of metro station. Also come across tennis court. Very soon come across agricultural land, small dwellings
In Go Air making announcement in hindi looks good. At 4.45 announcement made we are at 20,000 feet and temperature outside is - 14 degree Celsius. From 4.45 clouds galore accompanied by little turbulence. At 4.57 we see river below and there is clear visibility at 5.07

At 5.14 begin to lose some height, a little later gains some; at 5. 27 turbulence followed by severe turbulence and announcement made to this effect.
5.35 onwards again clouds  appear which keep the view not good
at 5.37 turns right
at 5.42 turns left; 5.43 onwards clear view
at 5.44 power plant or some industrial activity is seen. After some time the flow of ganga is seen and not far away is another set of industrial activity seen. At 5.49 it begins to descend and at  5.58 overhead plane flying can be spotted. At 6.10 announcement is made Bhubaneswar is 15 minutes from touchdown. Before 6 it was a clear sky. It seems late evening has set in between 6 and 6 08 pm. At 6.08 descending amidst thick layer of clouds
At 6.23 a huge river spotted having a rail bridge. At 6.26 wheels come out. The first impression about the city is that it is not that huge. There are fewer roads. Go Air finally lands at 6.28.
Perhaps the investment made in the airport looks to be huge and it seems to be a recent activity.  THe best part there is not much of a rush outside; more it appears to be a desolate stretch. Buses you get about two kms away from the airport. Perhaps a bus stand near the barrier could be handy. From here we head towards Ashok Nagar.

The ride from Balasore to Howrah

THe ride from Balasore to Howrah

Before we attempt to write on the ride to orissa, it would be prudent to essay the experience on ride from balasore to howrah
Having stayed in balasore for three days, it was time to head towards Howrah. As soon as we get down from a rickshaw, the first impression about the station is near absence of porters. The enquiry centre is manned by a lady with the board showing shatabdi sf as the name of the train. The right name is Puri-Howrah Shatabdi. This can confuse commuters. Reach Balasore station at 10.09. The name of the train is Shatabdi SF on the board where enquiry is made. Between Platform 1 and Platform 2 there are upper class waiting hall for gents and upper class waiting hall for ladies At 10.16  BLS-ROP-BPO-BGV local train comes.  At 10.18 shatabdi comes. At 10.22 Dhouli comes, going towards puri. At 10.24 the shatabdi leaves. WE come across first bridge at 10.27 and there is rich paddy field followed by second bridge at 10.30. The train slows down  at 10.29, gains traction at 10.32, at 10.35 nidhi panda comes with unhindered sighting of  rich fertile paddy fields. At 10.30 third small bridge comes.
At 10.36 it  slows down. At 10.37 amra comes and along amra runs a semi prepared road on left going inside a village.  Soon we come across a new expansive flyover over railway tracks. At 10.38 we sight a volunteer with a vest. The guard stationed at a railway crossing has a whistle. At 10.40 haldipada comes. Here at  a railway crossing small schoolgirls with bicycles can be seen.  Volunteer with vest  appears for one or two occasions - more of an isolated sighting. Near water tank and before  the tank there are wide swathes of greenery. THe view from the train window shows quite far away scores of trucks lined on road.
At 10.43 at a  railway crossing, scores of schoolgirls on bicycles can be seen.

At 10.44 perhaps station with the name rupya junction comes. At 10.45 we come across fourth small bridge and  fifth small bridge. At 10.46 nadanaga road,  10.47 jalaka bridge, 10.48 7th bridge, 8th bridge. During this time a small white house with velvet colour looks radiant.
At 10.50 basta station. There are small roads running parallel to station and they are little away from tracks, mostly used by students to bicycle
From 10.51 onwards open to huge agricultural fields flanked by trees  about 500 metres before Amarda station. At 10.53 Amarda road station comes. At 10.55 rich paddy fields and here mobile tower looks odd. At 10.56 we come across green coloured home lapped with window to see movement of trains.

At 10.57 9th bridge,  10.57 rajghat station , 10.59 10th bridge which is a little longer. A boat rowing below  conveys water has receded and bushes have come up
At 11.01 Jaleswar station, at 11.03 there is second flyover over tracks. At this time the train slows down, gains traction. At 11.08 agricultural land looks less abundant. At 11.11 we come across a semi pucca house followed by expansive agricultural land at 11.12.
At 11.20 belda, 11.23 bakhrabad, 11.27 narayangarh station  followed by expansive agricultural land and at 11.35 comes benapur. Again at 11.37 it opens to expansive agricultural land. Hijli station comes at 11.40 and at 11.43 we are underneath another set of rail tracks.
At 11.45 there is semicircle track on which the train moves. WE come across asbestos covered factory. We also come across a  man sitting with a bag under a tree shade. At 11.47 it slows down to 20 km, reach kharagpur outer where two set of tracks emerge. WE go past  Ada-KGP- DMO-Ada-KGP stationary train.
At 11.54 we are in  Kharagpur station. On Kharagpur platform 6 we sight a man carrying ORDA Puri bag, reading a bangla paper. On Pf 5 is Guwahati Ernakulam train stationed. On platform what can be noticed is a book stall and fresh fruit juice stall.
We leave Kharagpur at 12.08. Come across a man walking with umbrella and bags at 12.13. At 12.15 open to expansive agricultural land.  At 12.30 haur, 12.40 khair, 12.44 panskura. At 12.46 stops for a while and at 12.57 stops for a while. At 1 pm we are in mecheda station where a brand new local train is standing
At 1.05 Kolaghat, at the same time we come across longest bridge with deep water. At1.08 deulti, 1.10 ghorghata, 1.10 dantan station, 1.12 basnan, 1.17 Kulgachia, 1.20 Birshupur and 1.23 Ulberia

At 1.24 we go past baroda home  (not a station), 1.26 chengail station, we come across  a girl student with umbrella walking and speaking on a cell. At1.28 Bauria, 1.29 Nalpur station, 1.35 Andul,  1.36 santragachi loco shed,  1.38 santragachi,  1.39 Ramrajatala, 1.43 Tikiapara. WE reach Howrah at 1.52 on platform 23.

The ride lasted almost three and a half hours with enough sighting of paddy fields, overhead tracks and houses that were a pleasant surprise. The number of passengers that had gone down on pf 5 of Guwahati Ernakulam train suggested as if the entire train strength had got on to the  platform. As for Shatabdi there are sliding doors which most would suggest does not gell well with ageing population. A push/pull door is a better option. The train ride was gentle and so were the passengers.

Stay in national capital

THe stay in national capital has been a mixed bag. During Durgo Pujo celebrations the visit to Mandir Marg
Durgo Pujo celebrations entailed multiple visits to Mandir Marg Kali Bari. AS for the platform where the idol of Durga is placed is radiant, what needs to be looked at is the winding queue and the rush to seek prasadam. On earlier occasions the people were made to sit in rows for taking prasadam. Nowadays they are made to stand in the queue and jostle for space to reach the point where prasadam is distributed. THis area of conduct can be made better by letting people sit in different rows. THe stay in the national capital also saw me visit the office of Kali Bari Mandir Marg. THere i came across plans to redevelop mandir marg. Is redevelopment of mandir marg essential and that too when the present structure doe not emit heat and also has a fair share of greenery.
Amen Al Aji, Qatari Artist, made studio for a programme which hosted mexican actor. A woman, Amen Al Aji, have to be given right platform to promote their talent in the middle east.

DEcember and January were exceedingly cold as has been the months of April and May as far as oppressive heat is concerned .

Huge import oil bill; full page ad and those chased by real estate brouhaha

Huge import oil bill; full page ad and those chased by real estate brouhaha
What political party can do

The stay in national capital spread over different months brought the high and low tide that one normally comes across.  No better way to illustrate than take a look at the marvel of motoring and mentoring different sectors have been witness to. Had proper planning been done one house one vehicle would have become the norm. A city that prides in high disposable income, consider how many actually are in possession of high income or all it looks to be a case of big farce? THis high disposable income, the reflection of the same coming in big page ads on real estate to real rate has sent denizens in a state of submission. Submission that has led to a spurt in crime and being committed by staff who till the other day looked to be totally obedient.
One should always watch out for high sale purchase or transaction as it sets the ball rolling for anti social elements to strike. And these anti social elements are promoted by those meant to maintain order. We tend to hear stories about someone being waylaid here and there and if it is thoroughly probed the nexus between different elements gets revealed. In the national capital, take the case of a high rise construction taking place next to the premier medical institute of the country. That land after razing low height flats should have been dedicated to agriculture usage. A better part for agricultural usage and the rest to be turned into a ridge or something like that. THat would have brought fresh air and a kept a tab on vehicle addition.

We are importing oil; we have no shale gas; $ 462 bn is foreign debt
WE are not a country basking in huge oil deposits which would earn us high income when we would export. For oil imports also we have to rely on others; never an attempt made to explore the possibility of shale gas which serves as a good alternate to oil. THe ruling has come that full page ad would carry only few pictures. A better ruling would be no full page ad with no pictures of personalities. That would send a message that govt's resources are not being frittered away.
As a nation we receive 100 billion dollars as remittances each year. That is the highest that any nation receives. Consider this if there is a dip in remittances what the picture would look like. Saying that time has come to seek capital account convertibility does not reflect the mood of the nation. Your foreign exchange reserves are still not to the sufficient level; more so the $ 300 bn reserves get overshadowed by $462 bn foreign debt. One has to be very careful as far as reserves and the reasons to fritter the same.

For the opposition party which is chased by real estate brouhaha

The best course would have been to adopt 40-odd villages in each 40 district spread across country and see to it that sanitation facilities, sarva shiksha abhiyan and other programmes of the govt are doing well. This the grand old party could have easily done instead of taking a yatra here or there when real estate issue is something that chases them. Surrendering a part of the land in Rajasthan and Haryana could have been one way of making the public think that a wrong was done and we are here to correct that.  For the political party , Adopting villages across districts and monitoring them for different projects could be one meaningful way of getting back than taking isolated yatra here and there. And when political party members meet farmers who are in distress, at the same time the political party should come up with solutions on how this set of farmers or that set of farmers can overcome his or her challenges.  As for the govt the land bill is full of faults but taking a yatra here and there won't do when real estate chases you.  The govt's land bill should seek the approval of the party concerned before negotiations are reached.
As for videsh yatra this is doing little unless it adds to foreign exchange reserves. Getting full page ads shows how govt money is being wasted for no achievement seen or recorded. Keep a tab on all all govt functionaries who visit abroad and the spending power that too drawn from foreign exchange reserves should be limited. Similarly business houses which were told in the 90s and 2000s to invest aboard only added to the debt of these companies and as of now the indian companies debt stands at $120bn. How they would steer forward is hard to tell. JUst appearing in news conferences here or there or showing good numbers in one quarter won't do.

Fiscal deficit has been contained; where is the need to assuage FIIs
We tend to treat FIIs with high respect. When MAT (Minimum Alternate Tax) is a necessity where is the need to set up a panel to assuage their sentiments. Stock market driven by FIIs can't be promising. Just when fiscal deficit figure was about to come which showed fiscal deficit had been contained at 4 per cent where was the need for MAT relief to be given just four days before. Let market be allowed to stand on its feet than pleasing the FIIs which would make the task of taking any decisions redundant. Even pleasing FIIs can't make Rupee strong. You have to look for other measures. Because each day (each day) a new set of reporting comes. Today on strong global cues, the markets went up; the next day on weak global cues the markets went down. Less than 24 hours the global cues changed; does not this look childish. Bring back the MAT; let stock market stand on its feet. This way you would never be able to take decisions. And that too when four days later fiscal deficit and it staying at 4 per cent was about to come.  Rate cut should not be tried most people would say. Inflation is still a tricky issue.
One of the biggest follies of previous administration was setting up of seventh pay commission. To date over 2,50,000 crore goes towards salaries/pension of govt employees each year. What would be the outgo once seventh pay panel comes in? Think of that. From where would the money would come?

Hindi Movies like chooti si baat and batton batton mein may be available with english subtitles.
Particularly chooti si baat could be watched as it essays the simple things in life.
Similarly Super singer South India coming on a  South Channel is good so are Vasundhara, Nailayappan, Larsun and Krishna, the singers. It is meant to promote Tamil Music but it is reachable.

Stories we cherish

Stories on irrigation marvel if possible and same being replicated across country.

We admire Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. WE admire blacks and their contribution to Brooklyn bridge. Brooklyn bridge and the traffic that goes over. WE wish the best.

Stories most would desire

Perhaps edits/essays in papers in the national capital could be done by those in 20s and 30s. Once this door opens, this would take away the element of bias and promote the sections on the margins and keeping the eyes and ears open when police brutality takes place from andhra state to other places in the country. Let independent thoughts come and let there be a fair degree of honesty in writing than getting swayed by a cricket tourney or a stock journey where the the ease of doing is not entirely an act of honest sowing.

Stories on brutality across cities would be welcome
Stories on cockpit would be welcome
Stories on people from northeast would be welcome
Stories on how stocks are not primary motivator or a cricket board that has just people with political affiliations and needs cleansing

Stay in chennai; search for curd

Stay in chennai; search for curd

The story has been done on April 29th.

The stay in Chennai provided an opportunity to take locals on four to five  different days. Tuesday early afternoon i set for a place in search of meals. At the egmore station, some in the crowd were helpful indeed in suggesting mambalam the place where i could try meals.
Two eating joints i visited. First was Adyar ananda bhawan. Second was sarvana bhawan. Probably these are the eating joints i visited which are in proximity to a flyover. The first has no seating capacity, second has the capacity with sprinkling of a staff that may be little reserved. Since the second has the hall to accommodate a large number, some staff members may have been moved by the elaborate size of the client that they would be asked to cater to. After the meals took a local from mambalam to tambaram, came out of station, sought good range of fruits and the lady in the subway came with a good collection. The return to Chennai Park by local was ok. WEdnesday decided to take meals from a  place near Adyar. Took a bus from Broadway. The bus goes past High Court, State Sectt., Presidency College.

Probably the other eating joint i sighted while taking a public transport to adyar was meenakshi bhawan. This eating joint  could be tried at a later stage. the same day i took another bus towards Koyambedu. It went past telephone exchange, subway and mayor ramanathan salai. This area has green gain. Probably some kms later i get down and start working from a cyber cafe.  Later that evening set out in search for Thirumala curd. The curd that could be tried time and again. Taking enough curd with fruits and sunshine for a while can be helpful. Keeping oneself glued to a book or a paper that has contributions from editorial board can be handy. The paper quotes findings done by Balti 're Sun.
Thursday left for the airport and reached there well in time. The chennai airport has nothing spectacular about it. Probably the earlier airport when it was not renovated looked better with no attempt to remove old structures.

Inside Chennai Airport there are
- Balaji Pure Filter Coffee
-Sri Krishna Sweets
- G 1 - 13
The Paper stand are at two places. When we board, Go Air , Sri Lankan Airlines flights are landing
Stationed planes are from Maldivian Airlines, Middle East Airlines (may be Etihad). Those flying are AirAsia and Jet Konnect.
Anna International Airport on left side is domestic and on right side is international if you are on tarmac. Tamil Hindi English departure signboard appear respectively.

As for flight, the Literature on board conveyed
-All clear different situations pilots are trained to handle
-Pink getting back on feet
- Winner takes all (Awards from 2012 to 2014) takes the whole page, trim it to half or even less than that.
- Flights from Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kozhikode, Mumbai, Thiruvanthapuram, to Dubai.
Mumbai- Kozhikode, Dubai-Kozhikode, Delhi-Kozhikode
Bengaluru 11 times Mumbai
Vellore Institute of Technology Ad. How is the institute and what it does to promote corporate social responsibility is not known.
- 5000 biogas units in Chittoor of which 765 are ready to go. Here the emphasis should be to have more biogas units across state/ country.

What one would suggest bring more north east stories in the literature on board. As for the flight from New Delhi to Bhubaneswar, we came across one member of the crew hailing from ziro district in Arunachal Pradesh.   How much we respect the people from northeast in the national capital is less known. How much is the order in the national capital we all know.

The aircraft begins to move at 8.23. Halts for over an hour. Finally takes off at 9.36 after 40 sec run. The Metro construction is visible. After 1 minute 40 sec we are right above sea. At 9.48 turbulence for a minute. Since 10.16 more turbulence seen, gets stable at 10.30. At 10.48 the highest form of turbulence seen. Between 10.20 and 11 we are amidst heavy cloud. Around 10.30 the plane is at 36,000 feet cruising at around 900kms an hour. By 11 the flight begins to descend slowly from its highest point. At 11.25 the  announcement to descend is made. At 12.01 Lotus temple in the national capital of delhi is seen.  At 12.05 it finally lands
Gopi Kannan on Chennai airport tarmac looks relaxed.
In Chennai city i came across ATM Guard Manohar, Ansari the automan and  Abi's Net Paradise 1, Kakkan street West Tambaram. THis cyber cafe is quite comfortable, comfort is in its sitting arrangement and amidst the crowd that is simple.

As we hear Take a look at me now, the thoughts don't go wayward.

As for national capital, the true awakening (some would laugh at this thought) would come when the public transport moves with a fair degree of reliability and those on short fuse are able to control their thoughts and actions. Race is a big problem in the us we know. Channelising the energy in right direction could prove beneficial. WAtkins story shows the land we live in and discriminated we are at every passing hour. Perhaps the channel of west and channel of middle east could throw some light on incidents like this.

Perhaps edits/essays in papers in the national capital could be done by those in 20s and 30s. Once this door opens, this would take away the element of bias and promote the sections on the margins than keeping the eyes and ears closed when police brutality takes place from andhra to other places in the country. Let independent thoughts come and let there be a fair degree of honesty in writing than getting swayed by a cricket tourney or a stock journey where the the ease of doing is not entirely an act of honest sowing.

The regime we come across

The regime we come across

We come across stories that appear from the fief of national capital telling in detail the rise and bumpy performance of stock market and those who are on their target. Days have not turned to a month even when the biggest massacre in the southern state engineered brouhaha across country but it felt silent before it could erupt. If newspapers and channels don't perform where real events and barbaric boasts are not reported then who would have faith in them. Barbarism that news journalists come across but they turn their face the other side because they are paid for that. About some months ago we at home were examining the performance of a paper, critical in some respects and quite justified. We criticised how it performed and unruly elements that had spread their tentacles across and how this was not being reported. For two hours or so we spoke at home. We had finished finding faults with the paper's coverage of news and how in the name of generating revenue big ads were placed and all news that could alert readers on new patterns emerging in society and how it placed at risk the school-going youth, teachers, pedestrians and other commoners were ignored. After a few minutes out came one to two bikewallahs showering us with choicest of abuse as we sat in our room. THis choicest of abuse they have been showering us each time when it suits them . It is not the public which is doing it, it is their men who have been let loose.  They went past our place of stay and all they were asked to convey were choicest of abuse when we sat in the room. That was a realisation that those from police department, their acquaintances and other known people who work in these channels and newspapers. That is why there is never truthful reporting.

What was our fault? WE were critical of the paper and its coverage of news. This the police head could not tolerate. We are not banking on any paper/ channel. We express views at home. THat is all we do. You have your acquaintances and other known people in different channels/ papers working in different capacity. That is your right. But who gives you the right to pass abuse at us and only then when we are sitting in the room. Or send unruly elements when we are sitting in the verandah.
We are not even talking about middlemen who perform different tasks in different departments. A common Indian when approaching someone for justified work is turned away just because he can't offer suitable compensation. For how long the common indian would be asked to pay for a service that should come in the normal course. Right from big vegetable/fruit godowns (also called subzi mandi) to big malls, big convocations, all have potential to do things at least honestly by 80 per cent. But because of them they have become easy targets for dishonesty to thrive and have become potential targets for extreme forces. WE get orders passed by courts saying this and that force is facing shortage. Ask any commoner, he will tell you each and every force is adequately filled perhaps in some cases have more than requisite numbers.
We come across stories in a paper about the rise of two sons in the southern state; the entire piece looks to be out and out plant. You had this barbaric assault on labourers in the south, not even fifteen days ago and other such incidents later and you have the temerity to carry the story on sons and their rise.
In the 50s itself, had the police force been on contract, most indians would agree that the issues related to maoists, naxalites would not have surfaced. Even if someone does not have employment won't take to arms immediately only when he or she , yes he or she comes across people in uniform or those in civilian clothes acting at the behest of law and order department begin to fleece here or there. If someone's hard earned money is snatched or someone's savings are forcefully taken away then that person would tend to deviate from his/her path. A sanction to get house constructed keeps getting delayed on one ground or the other, then that person would deviate from his/her path.
If papers, news channel from national capital can't take their eyes away from a cricket tourney that is pathetic to say the least and these news channel/ paper don't report on alarming situation in national capital and which gets translated to other towns/cities, then those papers/channels should diversify to some other business. If papers/ channels had taken a stand that even if newsprint delivery and tv studios are disrupted we would do at least 70 per cent of truthful reporting, the poor law and order that we see today would not have been there. Just employing people from police department across the country (both directly and indirectly and in allied industries) and keeping them in good humour is not your job. Report on how AIIMS across country can improve its services, report on how public schools can be restrained from charging high fees for which the parents tend to deviate, report on institutions (from colleges, schools, govt bodies, finance institutions, private institutions )where people from class iv or above pass filthy talk about their seniors and those who don't join their rubbish conduct are shown the door and this translates to a big law and order problem across country. Employing huge staff since we have to run the paper, channel or an institution is devoid of merit if it can't keep even basic discipline.
There are institutions in southeast asia, in central america, in states of us, in bolivia, in middle east, in asia and pacific where order looks to an enduring concept, not privilege.

Staying in Chennai; the lodge; the local rides

Staying in chennai

Having reached Chennai on a thursday, the rush at the platforms suggested the never-ending desire of people to reach their destinations, long distance and local trains traced as enduring motivator. A sense of indiscipline you come across stations across country but you should consider yourself lucky if you leave the premises unscathed. It was no point arguing with autos as rates had been set by higher authorities and if you beg to disagree the lawlessness is all rampant. Reached the lodge in an auto decided by them, charging a little less than 100 for a distance that won't be even two-and-half km. The place is dug up, the forlorn look is a reminder how far it has travelled from the vibrant setting seen in madrasapattinam, the movie. And the pollution in the air suggests some remedial measures are called for.  As for autos and their need to go by fare chart, it won't be hard to trace the roots for non compliance  If such episodes do  get repeated across cities/towns of the country, some would argue there is a need for course correction. Starting from national capital where law and order does not evoke promise, a quick check on number of autos that ply, their actual strength, the accretion over the years and how it could be made more hospitable would be beneficial. An exchange of transactions that leads to adding to their strength won't prove handy for commuters. Drawing a blueprint of their functioning, keeping all papers in order where they don't fleece anyone and they also don't get fleeced would lead to a great deal of order. Same is the need for checking the number of buses on roads and if indulging in rash driving, the need to set things in order. A lax law and order in delhi has a reflection in other places.

Autos, lodges, stores, laundry set up,fleet of buses and their pliable conduct  and most places seen as one for public to  collect and converse do send an impression of the city/town and its reliability. Is there an order that spells good tidings or on order that spells mischief and disorder depends a lot on how city has come up, freed from varying degree of consternation.  Mischief they indulge in or don't indulge depends on the support they have garnered.

The room allotted in Virudhnagar Nadar Mansion, Poonamallee high road, Periamet, the tea taken from nearby vendor, it was time to retire for the day. What followed was a night of pain and suffering. An upset stomach followed by vomit suggested the food taken on train that evening was not that palatable. The appearance of bedbugs added to the unforgettable night. Early morning left for Choolai Medical Point, Hunters Road where the doctor suggested another set of medicines, with special emphasis on curd rice as meals. From the appearance of the automan who took me to Hunters Road and to the lodge, one could believe this was one who believed in going by the rules. During the course of seven day stay in Chennai, it was Bell restaurant that provided the requisite dose of curd rice.
This Bell Hotel is on other side of the lodge and one has to walk a fair distance before taking a u turn and again walking the same set of distance. There are no overbridges here.  And if you have to go past stores, travel agents shops and other stores some would spit next to you as you go past them.
SAturday as well had the opportunity to visit Egmore. The one store serving as medicine dispenser and general store seem to have airs of his own. Better to ignore. As for Vasanta Bhawan one day appeared to stay on line, the second day as i went to take meals and as i began to wash hands, from nowhere one waiter appeared and began to spit repeatedly in the second wash basin. Same thing happenned in Mambalam where after finishing meals from a second eating joint as i came out, one boy came near to me and spat and moved in a different direction. This was followed by a search for oranges which took me to a lady where as i was negotiating the price, a coconut vendor came from nowhere and repeatedly spat, this time a little away. Mambalam is a fairly crowded area. As for Virudhnagar nadar mansion, the place is good, the jayanthi restaurant can on occasions be difficult if law and order machinery begins to spread its presence in an odd way. One staff boy seem to relish his rude conduct there.
SAturday the day i had taken train ticket, the visit to shops in the premises of railway station helped me to get a good tidy halwa (sweet confections), perhaps flour-based.   Sunday was meant for a local train ride from Chennai Park to Tambaram.  Monday i came across a crowded local which was meant to take me to tirusulam.  And that too on a public holiday. Some told me this local went all the way to Kancheepuram.

On a Sunday after doing story from a cyber cafe in Tambaram, which i should admit was very cooperative, reached the local station. It was a long line to the window counter. The local left at 4.53, reaching tambaram sanatorium 4.56, chrompet 4.58, pallavaram 5.03, tirusulam 5.05,  minambakkam 5.07,  (woman guard), palavanthangal 5.10, st thomas mount 5.12, guindy 5.15, saidapet 5.20,
mambalam 5.22, kodambakkam, 5.22, nungambakkam 5.27, chetpet 5.31 and egmore 5.34 pm.

The rides across city in locals brought me face to face with people from northeast. Perhaps they were there for study or doing service. For reaching airport took a local from egmore at 8.40 in the morning, reached trisulum at 9.20. Way back left tirusulam at 10.35, going past  minambakkam 10.37, st thomas mount 10.42, guindy 10.45, saidapet  10.49, Kodambakkam 10.55, nungabakkam 10.57, chetpet 11. On a Tuesday visited two eating joints in Mambalam. THe Ganesh temple there looks good. The security guard looked to be relaxed.
As for the lodge, two stores nearby were handy, one run by arun kumar. Nilgris departmental store was equally good.

Staying in chennai; other thoughts

One should be cautious while going to take shower. One should watch out for surface beneath them. Bathrooms should have least tiles or marble on floor. It can be slippery. Across countries the way to shower and the floor should not be slippery/wet. It is better to skip shower or bathing. If noises of high level are repeatedly coming from outside it can hurt bathing enormously. Across countries most people would argue to have a floor that is not made from tiles/marble and if so it should not be wet/slippery. People have to be cautious while bathing. A simple bathing would do.
Keeping engaged to some creative pursuits would do. A tennis match here, reading there would do. While taking a train from Puri towards another town we came across a gentleman who if not deep in books, at least a fraction of his mind was towards a book.

Holding no one accountable

Holding no one accountable

Rash driving,  poor order and poor infrastructure that we see everyday

There has been no dearth of reports on the pollution patience that the national capital is grappling with. Some would disagree that huge structures add to the mess. But it does. So does the creation of multiplexes when single screen theatres let people take most of the public transport.

We tend to believe that giving a fickle coverage here and there would serve the purpose. It is all to do with a lax law and order machinery. They say over 80,000 trucks enter/exit the national capital through night. That number would have been fairly less in the 80s.  A lax law and order machinery that lets rash driving, speed thrills and this has become more commonplace. An entire network of road construction that stands suspended; that stretch of road that would cover the outer fringe thereby not letting the trucks / machinery enter the inner courtyard/battleground of city should be the priority. No amount of graft in this completion of project should be tried. The poor law and order in delhi is more to do with state of affairs; you run these number of poorly maintained buses; you run these number of ill-tempered staff on public transport and trucks and any aberration would go unreported as all ob vans are under their patronage. Media and those singing praise of the administration despite knowing the facts is something a poor reflection on them.
In the media we tend to cover the massacre in the southern state for a while; forgetting the aftershocks that would be felt for a long time. Those in the call of duty and having taken part in excesses should be taken away from all responsibilities.A delay knowing pretty well that media would happily converge on other unimportant stories should be avoided. A police force that is on contract would bring dramatic results as far as maintaining good order is concerned.

Sarva Siksha Abhiyan
We tend to cover someone returning from exile and some going abroad to exchange file. These are not priorities. The vast army of unemployed youths and how they should be channelised should be the priority. Sarva siksha abhiyan and the loopholes it has and how it can be addressed should be a way forward. THe entire media should pick up 40 -odd districts across country; at least cover 70 per cent of schools; see the enrolment process, cover the number of students completing entire education and those dropping out and suggest measures where these dropouts could be discouraged. First randomly pick 40-odd districts across country; cover 70 per cent of schools and review the sarva siksha abhiyan project. Find the faultlines and suggest remedial measures. If students are not able to complete schools/colleges, then it is as good as being waylaid and this can become a big challenge to the order we seek to restore. Similarly the media as a contingent should cover the functioning of India's premier medical institution AIIMS and report the positive and not that positive picture. By announcing AIIMS in every state is nothing; more important is to see they function to their optimal level and more efforts engineered to see best doctors, nurses work for them.
Media behaves irrationally by covering this stock market and that cricket tourney that is ill-tempered. Bring the true face of the massacre in southern india, try to report the true happenings, try to report how railways can improve its infrastructure. Because in national capital when people come from far away place for treatment in AIIMS, at the very station/bus stop they come face to face with a dishonest administration and get swayed by middlemen. Middlemen that exist in plenty in law and order department, govt set up and in medical centres. More transparency is the need of the hour.   Similarly the media should report on A'pur subzi mandi because from here all exchanges take place leading to skyrocketing prices of essentials and other commodities.
In the US and in some places in China despite ban the media is doing pretty well. The paper of new york city covers stories with no bias. The channel of middle east and channel of west do their job with sincerity. As they have been covering airports across country, so too the media here has to cover the infrastructure in different govt areas and how they can be improved.

In nagar and tiru as well, you tend to go to extreme and despite being told to not to do so, you don't stay in order. A calm proceeding and a restraint conduct would itself ensure monitoring. Not offending someone or crossing the line of moderate conduct. Even the air that comes from these sacred theatres should make you show compassion and not try to indulge in acts that few can justify.

Visiting Chennai

Visiting Chennai

Some weeks ago had the opportunity to visit Chennai. The ride to Nizamuddin station was accomplished with ease.At the entrance of the station as we reached they put up a barrier and one had to go all the way and then take a u turn where the entire premises is packed with vehicles on either side and to reach the entry point of the stairs that take you to platforms is quite tedious. The alley through which one vehicle can go at a time is both challenging and divulging a little about not that secured set up.
As i hailed a porter, he showed his willingness to carry the little load for 100rs. Inside the coach, the lower berth amidst not that loitering crowd made for a simple setting.   The train left delhi at 3.55 pm. It went past  Tughlaqabad 4.10, palwal 4.40, Hodal 4.59 and Mathura at 5.32. I was seated among three lads dedicated to work towards a company making towels and allied products. No sooner the train left the calls and the accompanying thunder began to register. One among them appeared so agitated that he banged the cell at a pitch that sounded as if ringing a bell. As narrated by them and not confirmed by others they had come from the state of punjab having taken a morning train and reaching national capital of delhi in the afternoon when weather was cold and there weren't any attempt to get bold. Some among them deprived of adequate sleep decided to take a break only to get up and go back to rest time and again; the chasm showing on what they desired to do and what actually they were going through. Some among them having graduated from a private college in the outskirts of national capital brought the debate back on plethora of private colleges and the vast army of students with professional qualifications from these private colleges and yet failing to get the requisite job.
As for train ride, Raja Ki Mandi Agra came at 6 , main Agra station 6.15, Gwalior 7.30, Jhansi 8.50, Bhopal 11.58, Nagpur around 6 the next morning. Agni station which comes a little later is fairly clean, Sewagram 7.05, some station with letter H comes at 7.30; between 7.30 and 8.30 comes chandrapur. In and around this area what one could make out is the need to apprise people about  hygiene. Balharshah came at  8.45, Sirupur Kazhak Nagar 9.53, Belampalli 10.18, Pedammpet 10.38, Ramagundam 10.41 (fairly clean), warangal around 12, mahubabad 1.10, Gundrati Matugai 1.18, Errupalem 2.40, Vijaywada 3.30, Surareddipalem 5.35, Bitragunta 6.23, Nellore 6.28, Gudur 7.30 and Chennai 9.20.
The meals on board was ok except for the night meals the second day and its after effects. The fruit salad should have been avoided. As i reach Chennai and stay there for a week, the stay in a lodge near chennai central station is a mixed one. Stay in virudhnagar nadar mansion.

AS for outings in the city they were neither limited nor liberating. On a Sunday left  chennai park station at 11.20 am on a local and reached tambaram at 11.45. After doing stories from a cyber cafe, left at  4.40 and reached at 5.24 in  chennai park. On a monday left chennai egmore at 8.40 am and reached trisulum at 9.20. From Trisulum leave at 10.35, minambakkam coming at 10.37, st thomas mount 10.42,  guindy 10.45, saidapet 10.49, kodambakkam 10.55, nungabakkam 10.57 and chetpet at. 11. There used to be a govinda temple in the airport premises. In the renovated airport surroundings i could not locate that.
The phone booth at the airport is a big farce. It does not operate.  Nothing spectacular about the renovated airport.Yes inside it carries a warmth of its own.  A word of praise solely for Trisulum station and the entry /exit point. There is an expansive flyover coupled with a fast moving traffic that does not engineer praise. AS for Tambaram there is an expansive market adjoining a huge flyover. Outside local station there are fewer ATMs and at nearby bus stand, i am told it takes two hours for a bus to reach periamet, egmore.

As for mambalam, it has a fairly cowded market, so congested is this that some people begin to lose their sanity. Two eating joints i visited was ok. One can fairly assume the market has fewer concerns about how to keep its surroundings safe. the book stall in mambalam station looks good and here i happen to meet soundarajan and s murthy.
The stay for seven days had its share of pain and mixed tidings. One could feel the pollution in the air in the area around lodge near chennai central station; made more difficult by digging and construction work. The ride to Adyar saw me go past broadway market, high court, chief secretariat, university of madras and presidency college.

Worst massacre in Andhra Pradesh's history

Worst massacre in Andhra Pradesh's history

This point blank shooting of 20 labourers in Andhra Pradesh clearly shows the brutality of police and its accompanying force. You had a video of a black man being shot in South Carolina and that helped to prove culpability of a police officer. Here no such video existed. Police version was all about firing in self defence. All shots were fired by them in the chest or face. Second there were marks on their wrists. Third there were torture marks on other parts of body. One police personnel present there stated that labourers whom they found to be smugglers attacked them with sickle and stones. If being attacked with sickle and stones how could these police personnel shoot them and that too with so much of precision. The marks on wrists suggests they were tied, tortured in other parts of the body (burn marks) and then shot. Only shooting from a close range can explain the shots in chest and face. And they say firing in self defence for being attacked by sickle and stones. If they were attacked by sickle and stones they would have fired from some distance and in that case shots in the chest and face could not happen in all the cases. The reality is some labourers as one witness stated were picked  up by plainclothesmen from a bus, taken to these spots. The witness who fears for his life has gone into hiding as immeasurable pressure would be brought on him to retract his version or his relations/acquaintances would be pressurised to make him change his version. If this witness had a video, it would have been amply clear that these 20 labourers were shot from a close range (given the shots in the face and chest), before being shot they were tied as signs on wrists clearly suggest that and torture marks on parts of body suggest before being shot they were subjected to that. Even if there is no video the entire sequence of events clearly point towards the labourers being first arrested, subjected to torture on different body parts and being shot from a close range. Shooting with precision in self defence when it is pitch dark/ wee hours is something that does not carry conviction. And all these labourers have been described as smugglers, well in reality those picked up from the bus were going to get some work.

This barbaric shooting by policemen shows the least control the administration has on them Still the police chief of the state says is there a law to suggest that shots are to be fired below knee. Perhaps the supreme court guideline he is not aware of. Today this barbaric incident, tomorrow another barbaric incident would happen, the policemen would go scot free, and police chief would ask media to ask intelligent questions. Twenty labourers have been shot and the entire clamour for suspension of police personnel involved in the incident and sacking of police chief has been seen across different news channels/media. One writer suggested that had this incident taken place in the US where these number of people belonging to one race/community being shot, the govt's days in office would have been numbered. No one would like such incidents to have a repeat in any part of the world.

As for comments to this report of barbaric shooting in the net stated that police action is justified, the rationale can be traced to these comments being made by acquaintances of policemen. Otherwise if neutral opinion has to be sought, the clamour among responsible citizens would be to sack the police chief and sack the police personnel involved in this barbaric act. One black man being shot in South Carolina and the video surfacing of the same saw the policeman being  dismissed and put behind  bars. Here in national capital this sort of fake encounter in the 90s saw two businessperson being shot and the police chief being dismissed the very next day. Though he tendered his resignation, it almost amounted to being dismissed. When such fake encounters take place in national capital, quick action some govts take, in other cases 20 labourers being shot in one place and in other case five convicts being shot in telangana shows the arrogant style of police functioning and no action being taken against state police chief and police personnel involved. Such barbaric acts are taking place in a country where political class has least intention to set corrective measures and with such inaction only things are going to get bad. Already repercussions have been felt across border and take measures before things go out of hand.
The paper of new york city had the story of a black being shot as the lead story. Though media highlighted this incident, there were sections of media putting this as second or third lead or some carrying as single column and some even not bothering to carry the story. They are so fearful of police brutality that they carried just as single column or no mention of the same. Media has to rise, the police brutality has to be brought out in the open otherwise repercussions would be felt across different layers of society.   Had the video existed of this barbaric shooting then and only then a set of corrective measures would have been taken. The entire population of the country is over 1.2 billion and the number of those who are disgruntled/dissatisfied or could sway this way or that way outnumbers the population of north america as a continent.  There is no need to draw a parallel but
given the low net penetration and low circulation of news one could live with these barbaric shootings for a day. It won't take long before these barbaric incidents if not checked leads to a wider problem.
