The Poll Story of 2019 in India: Who Triumphed And Who Whined

The Poll Story of 2019 in India: Who Triumphed And Who Whined

As Grand New Party notched 300 plus seats in 2019 polls, the poll bout suggested that it had enough numbers on its rolls. With a party cadre spread across length and breadth of the country numbering over 11 crore (over 110 million), the organisational advantage saw it reach home with voters registering and asserting even from places like Rome.  The 45 minute speech delivered from party headquarters post leads was reminiscent of a dialect delivered from ramparts of Red Fort suggesting nothing could shake their boat.

In India fewer and fewer had any interest in the staggered seven phase polls and as it entered the last lap stories started doing the rounds on success to rope in million of voters and its success to tap. Twenty Twenty four (2024) is still five years away and that could well throw up a verdict with a clear majority if the leader who would have turned 70 plus by then wishes to stay in the fray and not turn haughty.  The verdict day when poll results were to roll out it evinced keen interest among the masses as it showed primarily one sided contest in a host of seats and not staggering poll bout. News channels with repute and no nonsense approach like NDTV were watched with abiding interest with anchors to participants trooping in from 7 am and post assessment of poll results some continuing well past 7 pm. As for poll watchdog holding polls in three phases would be a possibility if articulate planning is in place and that would raise a praise.

The so-called third front with enough grunt stand a chance in 2029 and that could be much earlier than that and from there onwards Grand Old Party post 2034 could have an innings that could roar. Two States where citadel was tough to breach for right wing party were Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the states with enough aura of invincibility and sustaining economics that is voodoo. As for just concluded 2019 polls the Grand Alliance and its Arithmetic lie in tatters and they would have to revisit the template and perhaps go solo and for a favourable verdict they may not have to go for enduring wait.

Now the stage is set for swearing in which should be simple and those invited to the event radiating dimple, as for task of holding talks with the neighbouring country it should be nipped in the bud as situation is far from normal in J-K and its hut. Perhaps what swung in favour of Grand New Party were 100 million plus first time voters casting ballot in its favour from places as varied as in Rajasthan's Beawar. A series of welfare measures like electricity to every household to building toilets in large pockets of country to gas connection to far and wide did make a difference and for future grasp Kerala and Tamil Nadu citadel have to be breached by imaginative thinking that is not crass. Euphemism for success is stay tight, stay close to electorate to have pulse of the nation and not go by a theme that stress on caste segregate.

As the season has set in for party stalwarts to put in their papers, it should be accepted in all humility and with no remunerative rumours. Perhaps a working president for a year or two would be fine if the present Grand Old Party president wants to shed the responsibility for 730 days as the party finds it difficult to develop public interface and craze.
